St Edmund's Churchyard - open to the public

The churchyard behind St Edmund’s Church is a tranquil oasis in the middle of the town.  Though the main paths are mowed, much of the area is not actively managed and it is full wild flowers, insect life and birdsong in the spring and summer.

The church obtained the right of burial in 1516.  The earliest headstone, dating from 1714, is Listed (Grade II) as being of historic or architectural importance, as is a mid-18th century chest tomb.  The last recorded burials were in 1877.  There are reference copies of an illustrated index to the graves in the south porch and just inside the main church door; and the churchyard can be unlocked by appointment for people wanting to examine the gravestones.

A number of Shipston residents have asked whether the churchyard could be opened up to the public.  It used to be left open but was closed some years ago because of concerns about anti-social behaviour and security.  The Parochial Church Council would love to be able to share this space with the rest of the town and plans to open it again, on a trial basis, during the daytime between 4th and 12th June, which happens to be national Cherishing Churchyards Week.

Do come and make use of this precious town centre resource.
