wccThere are three levels of Government in Shipston on Stour:

  • the Town
  • District
  • County Councils

Warwickshire County Council (WCC) provides a number of services that affect local people:

  • WCC is the local education authority, and as such runs many of our schools
  • It runs social services, providing help to families, older people and people with disabilities
  • The County Council is responsible for roads and for local transport policy.  It decides on things such as speed limits and other traffic control measures
  • Along with the District Council it provides support (and sometimes premises) to businesses
  • It also helps to co-ordinate support and promotion of tourism in the county
  • WCC is also responsible for some waste and recycling facilities and policy
  • With other agencies (such as the police and fire service) the County Council also has a role in community safety.  It, for example, provides support to local communities’ emergency planning
  • The County Council also provides advice (and enforcement) on trading standards to both individuals and businesses

WCC is run by a leader with a cabinet, and is currently Conservative led, with scrutiny committees (the bodies which scrutinise the decisions made by the cabinet) being chaired by either Labour or Liberal Democrat councillors.  There is one Independent councillor.

Shipston’s representative is Councillor Chris Saint (elected in 2005).  County Councillors serve four year terms – so the next County Council elections will be in 2009.
